Summer Adventures on the Water – How to Enjoy the Holidays and Stay Safe
July is a time full of water adventures, cruises and motorboat sports. How can you fully enjoy the summer on the water while also taking care of your safety?
The holiday season is in full swing, and July is the month when most of us enjoy vacations, sunshine, and opportunities for active relaxation. Nothing brings as much joy in summer as moments spent on the water, whether we choose sailing, motorboating, kayaking trips, or relaxing afternoons on a paddleboard. Water gives a sense of freedom, helps us forget everyday responsibilities, and allows us to enjoy nature. However, to make summer truly carefree, it is worth remembering safety rules that help avoid unpleasant situations.
Water is a powerful element that can be unpredictable, which is why proper preparation is the first step toward a successful holiday. If we plan to visit lakes, rivers, or the sea, checking the weather forecast is essential. Strong winds, storms, or sudden temperature changes can significantly affect comfort and safety on the water. Sailors should regularly monitor weather alerts and plan their routes so that, if conditions worsen, they can quickly find shelter in a harbor or a safe bay.
Proper equipment is also the foundation of any water-based activity. Whether we rent a boat, kayak, jet ski, or SUP board, it is always worth making sure the equipment is in good condition and equipped with the necessary safety features. A life jacket is essential – even if you are a good swimmer, it can save your life in the event of an unexpected accident. It is also a good idea to bring a waterproof bag for your phone and documents, and carry a signaling whistle that can help call for assistance if needed.
People using motorboats, jet skis, and other motor-powered vessels should remember the basic rules of navigation and right-of-way on the water. Unfortunately, every year the number of accidents caused by recklessness and lack of knowledge of regulations increases. Being on the water under the influence of alcohol is not only extremely dangerous but also an offense that can result in heavy fines and the loss of boating licenses.
July is also a time for family trips by the water, so parents should pay special attention to children’s safety. Even shallow water can be dangerous if the situation is not fully under control. Young children should always wear buoyancy vests, and swimming should take place only in designated areas supervised by lifeguards. If you are going on a cruise with children, it is worth teaching them basic safety rules on board in advance, and explaining to older kids how to behave in an emergency situation.
When traveling on inland waters, it is also important to respect the natural environment. Unfortunately, during the summer season many lakes and rivers become victims of irresponsible tourists who leave trash behind and pollute the water. A responsible traveler always takes their waste with them, avoids excessive noise, and follows environmental protection rules. It is also worth choosing eco-friendly cleaning products for washing water equipment and avoiding the use of combustion engines in places where they may disturb the ecosystem.
Summer evenings spent on the deck of a yacht, morning swims in the lake, and the thrill of speed on a jet ski are moments that remain in memory for a long time. However, to ensure they remain only positive memories, it is worth following basic safety rules, taking care of the environment, and using common sense. Let July be a month full of joy, discoveries, and wonderful moments on the water – but also responsibility and care for the safety of yourself and others.
