First Polish Medals at the European Water Skiing Championships

The European Championships in cable water skiing are underway in the Dutch city of Weert. On Saturday, the medalists in the team classifications and slalom events were announced. Medals for Poland were won by the U19 team (silver) and the U15 team (bronze), while an individual success in slalom was achieved by Emilia Szumańska, who became the European Champion in the U15 category.

Let us recall the rules of scoring in the team classification at the European Championships: according to the championship regulations, a national team may consist of a maximum of six athletes. The team must include at least two athletes of the opposite gender (for example: two female athletes / two male athletes; two male athletes / four female athletes). Team classification points are calculated based on points earned in the elimination rounds, not in the finals of the European or World Championships. In each of the three disciplines—trick skiing, slalom, and jumping—the results of the three best members of the national team are taken into account.

Following these rules, we can report that the following athletes scored points for the Polish teams: in the U19 category – Mateusz Wycisk, Oliwia Janik, Ksawery Szumański, Gabriela Koszycka, and Ewa Bartoszewska; in the U15 category – Jakub Drewiczewski, Dominika Cyl, Emilia Szumańska, and Kacper Klukowski.

Team European Championship medalists – U19 category
Slovakia – 7542.46 points
Poland – 7363.93 points
Germany – 6728.47 points

Team European Championship medalists – U15 category
Slovakia – 7892.62 points
Germany – 7798.69 points
Poland – 6294.99 points

Unfortunately, our team did not manage to reach the podium in the Open category. The Polish team finished in fourth place, behind Germany (gold), Slovakia (silver), and Austria (bronze).

The first individual medal for Poland at these championships was won by Emilia Szumańska, who proved unbeatable in the girls’ U15 slalom final on Saturday and stood on the top step of the podium. For the young representative of the Zefir Bytom club, this is the greatest achievement of her career. Emilia Szumańska showed tremendous determination and fighting spirit—not everyone knew that on Thursday, just before the championships began, she twisted her ankle during one of the training sessions and competed while injured.

In Saturday’s slalom finals, we also had three more competitors. Kacper Klukowski finished fifth in the U15 category. In the same age group, Jakub Drewiczewski placed seventh. In the Open category, Dawid Kazek finished eighth. (Prepared by Adrian Skubis)
